A man has been jailed for two years after being caught taking driving theory tests on behalf of other people.

Davinder Singh, 34, was arrested after attempting to sit a test at a centre in Park Street, Croydon, on August 2 following an investigation by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

Investigators found Singh also impersonated others to take car, motorcycle and lorry driving theory tests at centres in Kingston-upon-Thames, Chatham in Kent and Southgate, north London.

Sentencing him at Croydon Crown Court on Friday, His Honour Justice-Smith QC said Singh, of Hounslow, had been involved “a sustained campaign that meant unqualified drivers would be on the roads”.

The judge added: “[The] consequence to the public is potentially lethal. People may have been killed.”

Andy Rice, head of counter-fraud at the DVSA, said: “This sentence sends out a clear message that those who want to defraud the driving test process will be pursued and prosecuted.

“The driving test is there to ensure that all drivers have the skills and knowledge to use the roads safely and responsibly. Anyone who tries to circumvent this process is putting innocent road users at risk.

“Driving test fraud is a serious offence and is dealt with accordingly. We have stringent measures in place to detect fraudulent activity and work closely with the police to bring all offenders to justice.”
